Addiction Disease Treatment: Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Trichomoniasis - Outpatient Program

Learning about the symptoms of Trichomoniasis in men and women of all backgrounds and economic levels will be a part of Session Eleven of your Outpatient Treatment Program at The Right Step.  During this eight-week course, you will be guided by licensed professionals through a wide range of informational material via a series of educational Sessions.

As you learn more about STIs during the drug and alcohol addiction treatment, you will move forward in the group discussion to cover the topic of the STI Trichomoniasis.

Although Trichomoniasis affects both men and women, it is the most common curable STI in young, sexually active women.  Women may contract it from either sex, while men may only contract it from women.

Outpatient Addiction Treatment: Symptoms of Trichomoniasis

Symptoms of Trichomoniasis in women will be discussed and covered during your Outpatient Session and you will also learn that Trichomoniasis is caused by the single-celled protozoan parasite, Trichomonas vaginalis. An estimated 7.4 million new cases occur each year.

As Trichomoniasis is discussed in your treatment for a drug and alcohol addiction, you will find that the vagina is the most common site of infection in women and the urethra (urine canal) is the most common site of infection in men. The parasite is sexually transmitted through penis-to-vagina intercourse or vulva-to-vulva (the genital area outside the vagina) contact with an infected partner. Women can acquire the disease from infected men or women, but men usually contract it only from infected women.

You will learn that men may not experience any symptoms or they may have a temporary

symptoms such as, but not limited to, a slight burning after urination.  A single, oral dose of Metronidazole is usually an effective cure.
