Addiction Recovery: Honeymoon Stage
When you participate in outpatient addiction treatment at The Right Step, you will be learning about addiction recovery and relapse factors during the Honeymoon stage.
Experienced, licensed instructors will lead your group discussions regarding this stage of early sobriety where the mood of a drug addict or alcoholic typically improves, energy increases, cravings diminish, confidence and optimism increase and it may feel as if the problem with chemical substance abuse is now in the past.
It will be explained to you that this stage is also popularly known as the pink cloud stage. While in this stage, many people with the disease of addiction become over-involved with work to the point of becoming a workaholic.
An inability to prioritize may be a problem during this period. One of the most important addiction treatment activities during this stage involves channeling, in some order of importance, the “honeymoon” energy toward specific recovery tasks.
It is critical that patients recognize that this “pink cloud” period is only temporary. They need to use the energy available during this period to put together a solid structure of beneficial activities for addiction recovery and build momentum that will carry them through the subsequent addiction recovery stages.
Factors of the Honeymoon Stage in Addiction Recovery
Some of the experiences that you will learn about which are common during the honeymoon stage of addiction recovery are overconfidence, using secondary drugs or alcohol, no longer including structure in their lives that they learned how to employ during addiction treatment, resisting the necessary behavior changes for maintaining sobriety, returning to the lifestyle they had while in active substance abuse, finding themselves unable to prioritize, and experiencing periodic paranoia.
