Addiction Recovery: Techniques for Stopping Substance Abuse
As your progress in your drug addiction and alcohol addiction treatment at The Right Step during the eight weeks of Outpatient substance abuse treatment program, you will be provided with the opportunity to become thoroughly familiar with thought stopping techniques that you can use to prevent an addiction relapse after achieving sobriety.
By this point in your educational Session, you will have learned about using visualization to help stop your thoughts of drug use or drinking alcohol. Now you are going to be learning about certain behaviors that you can employ to help yourself stop thinking about drinking or using drugs.
You will learn about the methods of snapping, prayer and relaxation. Snapping is when you tie a rubber band loosely around your wrist. When you are experiencing thoughts of drug or alcohol use, you simply pull the band around your wrist and snap it lightly against your skin, while saying “No” to the drug or alcohol use thoughts.
Once you have done this, use the visualization technique that you previously learned about to replace the dangerous drug using thoughts with positive thoughts that will not lead you toward addiction relapse.
Prayer and Relaxation in Addiction Recovery
Prayer is another way to replace the thought stopping techniques with positive thought. You may also work on relaxing with breathing techniques. Supportive, licensed instructors will help you understand that feelings of hollowness, heaviness, and cramping in the stomach are cravings for drugs or alcohol.
Breathing in deeply (filling the lungs with air) and breathing out slowly can often relieve these symptoms. Do this three times. You should be able to feel the tightness leaving your body. Repeat this whenever the feeling returns.
