Addiction Rehab: Understanding Addiction

At the completion of Session One of the Outpatient Program at The Right Step, you will learn how all of the aspects of the addiction cycle fit together.

Your belief system has created the perception of what a drug addict or alcoholic is.  This perception has then provided the foundation for impaired thinking or denial preventing your ability to absorb the additional information required for understanding how serious the nature of your disease actually is.

During this initial Session, you will have learned ways to identify the methods of denial you commonly used in the past.  Additionally, you will come to understand how this impaired thinking created doubt in your mind about your addiction; thereby validating the concept that continued substance abuse was acceptable.

The substance abuse that was supported by your denial then created the negative consequences or unmanageability you experienced prior to seeking help for your drug addiction or alcohol problem.

Understanding addiction through these initial lessons will have taught you that the consequences of your addiction have potentially affected your entire lifestyle and outlook, including creating painful emotional, spiritual and physical problems.

Upon completion of Session One, you will have learned methods for recognizing the direct connection between the unmanageability in your life and your disease of addiction.  Participation in group therapy will have given you an opportunity to deeply reflect upon the personal effect that substance abuse has had on you.

Treatment for the Addiction Cycle

The circular process of the addiction cycle has continued with each piece compounding the effects of the others and challenging your belief system without the ability to affect change in your life.  This was  because of the block created by the state of sincere denial regarding your substance abuse addiction.

Proceeding through the entire education provided during Session One will help you learn how to break down walls that are preventing you from receiving relief from the painful consequences of your drug or alcohol addiction.

After experiencing this supportive education process, you will begin the learning more about the disease concept, how addiction qualifies as a disease, the history of the medical science involved in determining that addiction is a disease, as well as the many aspects of the disease of addiction.

Continued participation in addiction rehab through the Outpatient Program will grow your understanding of your drug or alcohol addiction and help you progress toward recovery.
