Addiction Therapy: Disease Traits
The traits that qualify addiction as a disease are further discussed during Session Two of The Right Step’s Outpatient Program. You will learn that there are four identifying factors that qualify a condition as a medical disease.
Progressive Disease Symptoms
The first of the four criteria you will learn about is the disease trait called “Progressive.” Progressive symptoms are those that worsen over time. This characteristic of the disease of addiction is later described through an explanation of the phases of the disease.
Also covered in this session:
Disease Concept of Addiction - Part 1
Disease of Addiction: Initial Stages - Part 3
Disease of Addiction: Losing Control - Part 4
Disease of Addiction: Substance Abuse Withdrawal and Pain - Part 5
Brain Neurotransmitters: Phases of Addiction - Part 6
Biology of Addiction: Adults and Adolescents - Part 7
Predictable Disease Symptoms
Predictability is the next criteria. When symptoms remaining untreated routinely have similar consequences, they are predictable. In your addiction therapy course, other well-known diseases will be compared to the disease of addiction for developing a better understanding of what predictability means.
This comparison will be made in terms of physical, emotional and spiritual consequences experienced by one who is suffering from substance abuse addiction.
Chronic and Treatable Disease Symptoms
Next, you will receive additional education regarding the two disease criteria described as chronic and treatable.
A disease is considered to be chronic when it includes long-term or recurring symptoms. During addiction treatment at The Right Step, examples of chronic medical conditions will help you reflect upon your personal experiences and further your understanding of addiction as a disease.
Because addiction is not “curable”, the treatable criteria will be compared with other non-curable diseases. You will learn why and how the disease of addiction is treatable.
As you progress in your addiction therapy, supportive, licensed professionals at The Right Step will guide you through the process of understanding why continuous abstinence is the only way to successfully arrest your disease and improve the quality of your life.
