Addiction Treatment Program: Effects of Stress – Outpatient Program

While attending the Intensive Outpatient care program at The Right Step, you will learn about the various effects of stress and the common physical disorders associated with short-term, long-term and prolonged stress, as well as how to reduce the negative effects of stress on the recovering addict.

You will also learn that our bodies do not know the difference between the physical and psychological dangers of stress which can lead to physical disorders because the internal body system changes in order to cope with any level of stress. Our body chemistry reacts identically to any level of stress whether we are in a quarrel, a traffic jam, a life-threatening situation, or any other continuous challenge without relief. Once the internal body system ‘turns on’ to cope with stress it will remain in the ‘on’ position as long as the stress is present.

Treatment for Substance Abuse Addiction

Through the Intensive Outpatient addiction treatment program, you will discover that the original fight-or-flight response systems are designed to return to normal function once the perceived threat is gone, but in our times of chronic stress, this often does not happen, causing damage to the body.

Participation in the outpatient addiction treatment program will familiarize you with the different levels of stress and the types of common physical disorders to be expected from each.

Some physical disorders have short-term effects, like staying awake longer than normal, having an upset stomach, heart palpitations, or difficulty retaining information. Other physical disorders have longer-term effects, i.e., stomach ulcer, headache, back pain, weight loss, skin conditions such as hives, increased susceptibility to colds, and sleeplessness.

More seriously, stress over a prolonged time leads to degenerative disease of heart, kidneys, blood vessels, and other parts of the body. Chronic stress affects all major organs and cells as well as breaking down the immune system. Prolonged stress can cause an increase in blood pressure resulting in heart attack or stroke, diabetes, obesity, hyperthyroidism, sexual dysfunction, tooth and gum disease, hair loss, arthritis, and can certainly speed up the aging process
