Addiction Treatment Program: Recreational Secondary Drug Use

Attendance at The Right Step Outpatient Treatment Program will include participation in a series of sessions wherein you will be a part of a group that is guided by supportive, licensed instructors who will provide you with personalized attention and assistance in recovering from drug abuse and alcoholism.

You will learn during your addiction treatment that it is quite common for some people who are in early or later recovery to entertain the idea of using secondary drugs or alcohol as a substitute for the drugs they know themselves to be addicted to.

The rationale that will be discussed, which many recovering addicts have utilized goes something like this, “I came to addiction treatment to stop using my drug of choice. I never had a problem with this other drug, or with alcohol, so I don’t understand why I can’t use them recreationally.”

Treatment for Addiction

As you progress in your treatment for addiction and this topic is covered, you may hear a good metaphor to use that counters this rationale.  You will find that the addicted brain is very sneaky and powerful.

If you are well-defended against using your drug of choice, the addicted brain (limbic system) will try to get you to use your drug of choice by coming through the back door, or making an end run, via secondary drug or alcohol use wherein your defenses can then be weakened against preventing active substance abuse addiction.
