Addiction Treatment Program: Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Gonorrhea - Outpatient Program
As you progress in the Outpatient treatment program at The Right Step, you will have the opportunity to become familiarized with the symptoms and complications of Gonorrhea in men and women.
Learning more about Gonorrhea during your addiction treatment will include information provided to you by licensed instructors regarding the ways that Gonorrhea is spread and how it is caused by a bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Symptoms of Gonorrhea may include a discharge, painful or difficult urination. About half of those infected with Gonorrhea do not exhibit symptoms. However, Gonorrhea can cause serious complications in women including PID and ectopic pregnancy and infertility.
Gonorrhea Information: Outpatient Addiction Treatment for Drugs and Alcohol
The CDC estimates that more than 700,000 persons in the U.S. get new Gonorrheal infections each year. However, only about half of these infections are estimated to be reported to the CDC.
Important points regarding Gonorrhea that will be presented to you in your outpatient addiction treatment program include the fact that people with Gonorrhea can more easily contract HIV and people with HIV are more likely to transmit Gonorrhea.
You will also learn that Gonorrhea grows in the cervix, womb, fallopian tubes, urethra in women and men, as well as the mouth, eyes, throat and anus.
Gonorrhea can be treated with several antibiotics however; drug resistant strains are increasing in many areas of the world, including the United States. Successful treatment of Gonorrhea is becoming more difficult and new antibiotics or combinations of drugs must be used to treat these resistant strains.
