Addiction Triggers and Cravings – Outpatient Program

When you begin Session Five of Outpatient addiction treatment at The Right Step, you will be encouraged to participate in group discussions, wherein you will have the opportunity to learn more about the importance of understanding addiction triggers, as well as drug and alcohol cravings.

Included in understanding the nature of drug and alcohol addiction is the comprehension of the seemingly irrational behavior of the active drug addict or alcoholic. This is also a part of addiction recovery treatment at The Right Step.

You will learn that triggers cause cravings and cravings lead to substance abuse. Common sense would suggest that being around people, places, or situations that have resulted in past use, might increase the chances of using or drinking again. The additional influence these triggers have upon the brain makes the advice to avoid triggers more than just a good idea; there is no other way to reliably avoid drug and alcohol cravings and relapse.

Biology of Addiction: Alcohol Craving and Drug Cravings

Supportive, licensed professionals will guide you through the study of the craving process with regard to the underlying effects that drugs and alcohol have on the brain.  They will work to help both those suffering from substance abuse addiction and the families of the addicts to view drug and alcohol addiction in a new and more understandable way, as well as to see what is behind much of the advice given to patients early in treatment.

Proceeding forward in Session Five, you will be taught a number of additional specifics regarding triggers and cravings in assisting you on your path toward achieving positive change in your life.
