Alcohol and Addiction: Identifying Addiction – Outpatient Program
Treatment for alcoholism and addiction is provided through the Outpatient Program at The Right Step in a series of educational sessions during this eight-week course.
Upon completion of the first two Sessions of your treatment for addiction, you will be increasing your understanding of alcoholism and addiction during Session Three. After learning more about the widespread prevalence of addiction in the U.S., the health concerns and cost involved, you will be guided through visual and verbal exercises to help you better define what addiction actually is.
As the group discussion proceeds more deeply into information regarding addiction’s effect on the brain, you will have the opportunity to better understand the ways that addiction is a brain disease and how the brain functions after exposure to an addicting substance.

Biology of Addiction: Functioning Skills
Learning about the multi-faceted details involved in addiction disorder will help you to see that the compulsive use of an addictive substance is only one of the aspects of the addiction disorder.
Other aspects include behaviors and emotional processing, including coping skills, as well as the ability to function in society, the workplace and in your personal life while actively using drugs and alcohol.
The change that occurs in the brain’s functioning ability will be addressed during your Outpatient Treatment through evidence provided to demonstrate the loss of control, the development of higher levels of tolerance and the experiences of withdrawal and cravings.
All of these factors will be included in the discussion to help you learn at what point the use of drugs or alcohol reaches the level of addiction.
