Alcohol Craving and Drug Abuse Addiction: Disenchantment Phase

As you learn more about the strengthening of the conditioning occurring during increased drug and alcohol abuse in your Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program at The Right Step, you will have the chance to increase your understanding of the point at which alcohol and drug abuse become an addiction.

During your progress through the series of educational Sessions in your addiction treatment, you will have learned about the phases of drug and alcohol use leading up to acquiring the disease of addiction and how during this final phase, the Disenchantment Phase, you crossed over from casual drug and alcohol use into actual addiction disease.

Guidance through the process of understanding addiction will include this education regarding the brain conditioning, triggers and cravings for alcohol and drugs that developed, leading into the loss of rational control, which is an evidence of substance abuse addiction.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse: Physiological Responses

Triggers in this addiction phase produce a powerful physiological response that drives the user to acquire and use drugs and alcohol. Your substance abuse thoughts and addictive behaviors will have increased and begun to crowd out thoughts based on the other aspects of your life.

In the Disenchantment Phase that you are learning more about in your addiction treatment, the craving response is a powerful event. An overpowering physical reaction is experienced in situations further and further removed from the drugs themselves. The drug or alcohol craving response is almost as powerful as the actual effect of the substance itself.
