Biology of Addiction: Cerebral Cortex Effect
Discovering more about the biology of addiction will be part of your eight-week Outpatient Treatment Program at The Right Step. You will have a chance to learn a great deal about the effect of substance abuse on the brain.
During this portion of your addiction treatment program, you will learn about the effect of drug abuse and alcohol abuse on the cerebral cortex part of the brain.
One part of this that you will learn about is called cortical disinhibition. The information about cortical disinhibition that will be presented to you in Session Nine of your group addiction treatment will include finding out that using alcohol or marijuana can cause the cerebral cortex, the part of the human brain responsible for rational decision making, to become disinhibited, thus paving the way for a return to the drug of choice. Especially, if one is triggered or in a risky situation.
This is one of the reasons that you will learn why it is a dangerous choice to make when considering using secondary drugs or alcohol as a replacement for your drug of choice in addiction recovery.
Stimulant Craving Induction
Qualified instructors will provide you with more information about addiction relapse and the ways that secondary drug use can lead to this in part from different studies that have been conducted regarding stimulant craving induction.
These studies have shown that if cocaine or amphetamines are the drug of choice, a return to alcohol use will increase the risk of relapse to stimulants by 800%. A return to the use of marijuana will do the same by 300%. This remains true even if the individual with the disease of addition is not addicted to alcohol or marijuana.
