Addiction: Thought Stopping Addiction Treatment – Outpatient Program
Addiction recovery treatment provided through the Outpatient Program at The Right Step will include helping you to learn more about the process of addiction and ways that you can begin to realize the potential for positive change in your life.
Through your participation in group addiction treatment, you will have had the chance to learn a great deal about the biology of addiction so that you may, in turn begin to understand and experience recovery from your addiction disease.
As you have learned about the different phases of addiction and the development of addiction triggers and cravings, you will have seen the process that your brain goes through after continued and increased exposure to drugs and alcohol.
Treatment for Addiction: Thought Stopping
Included in your treatment for addiction at The Right Step will be learning the technique of Thought Stopping following the addiction trigger experience.
The biological process you will go through will make it more difficult for you to avoid substance abuse once you have reached the craving stage, although it is still possible with the use of the thought stopping techniques.
The drug addict or alcoholic may truly not want to use and attempt to deflect the drug or alcohol cravings, but more often than not, the cravings are so powerful that they roll over the addict and alcoholic, propelling the relapse that commonly occurs during addiction.

In your alcohol and drug abuse addiction treatment during Outpatient Treatment, you will learn about interrupting the usual process often culminating in using drugs or drinking alcohol. The usual reaction to thoughts is to argue with the developing thought or craving. The argument often results in the addiction winning over rational thought.
Arguing precedes negotiation, compromise, justification, and, possibly addiction relapse. Thought stopping ends this process before relapse can begin. Saying, “STOP” either in your head or aloud in response to the first hint of a using thought often stops cravings before they can manifest into active substance abuse.
