Brain Disease: Alcohol and Addiction – Outpatient Program

When you attend the eight-week Outpatient Program at The Right Step, you will have the opportunity to learn more about alcohol and addiction as a brain disease.  During group addiction treatment sessions lead by supportive, licensed professionals, you will be guided through the process of learning many details regarding the Reward Deficiency Syndrome and the affect of substance abuse on the brain neurotransmitters.

As you learn about the cascade theory of the reward system where chemicals spread out through the brain neurotransmitters to achieve the calm, comfortable, secure and satisfied feelings referred to as “reward,” you will then discover the ways that substance abuse affects this process in the brain and how this connects to the fact that addiction is a brain disease.

From previous lessons in your Outpatient Sessions, you have learned that alcoholism is an addiction to ethanol and is therefore correctly categorized as an addiction 100% of the time.

Biology of Addiction

Through interactive group discussions lead by supportive, licensed professionals, as well as the use of visual aids and including written exercises, you will better understand the ways that the brain is affected by substance abuse and the difference between the normal brain, the brain with Reward Deficiency Syndrome and the brain that is affected by substance abuse.

Included in your educational addiction treatment sessions will be the differences in males and females who suffer from addiction as evidenced in the analysis of the limbic system of the brain.

Upon completing this portion of Session Three of Outpatient Treatment for drug and alcohol abuse and therein proceeding through a summary of all that you have learned and had the opportunity to reflect upon, you will have increased your understanding of the disease of addiction and alcoholism and should be ready to proceed into Session Four, where you will continue to increase your understanding of the addiction cycle and its affect on your life.
