Brain Neurotransmitters: Phases of Addiction

You will be guided by supportive, licensed professionals through a series of Sessions when you attend the Outpatient Treatment program at The Right Step in any of the 20 cities our treatment facilities are located.

These Sessions are designed to aid you in your recovery from addiction through interactive group therapy and education, including visual aids, discussions and opportunities to reflect upon the nature of the disease of addiction and the effect that it has had on your life.

During Session Two, you will have learned more about the disease concept of addiction and the aspects the medical profession uses to define what a disease is.

You will also be guided through informative Sessions to help you better comprehend the different phases of substance abuse addiction and see the progression that becomes evident.

Group Addiction Therapy

The visual aids used in your group addiction therapy will have helped you to understand the feelings involved by demonstrating when the physical pain begins, the emotional pain and subsequently how this leads to the rationalization aspect of addiction disease.

All of these phases of substance abuse have an effect on your brain neurotransmitters.  During the initial stages of substance abuse, the neurotransmitters in the brain return to normal as soon as the chemical leaves the body.

These brain neurotransmitters also return to normal in phase 2 of the substance abuse addiction, however, they are slower to return to normal than they previously were.

Once you have reached phases 3 and 4 they will not return to normal and eventually become so altered that the sensation of pain is experienced when the chemical is missing.

As you progress further in Session Two of the Outpatient Program at The Right Step, you will learn more about the different effects that substance abuse addiction has on adults verses adolescents, as well as the time frames involved in the development of the disease of addiction.
