Disease of Addiction: Losing Control
By this point in your eight-week, group addiction therapy program at The Right Step, you have already begun to understand what emotions are involved in the disease of addiction and how drug and alcohol intake affects you.
As you are guided further into Session Two of the Outpatient Program, you will learn more about the phase of the disease of addiction where the loss of control begins.
Affects of chemical substance use become less predictable and may result in behavioral changes that are contrary to the value system formerly practiced. These episodes can result in mounting emotional pain during and after substance abuse.
Also covered in this session:
Disease Concept of Addiction - Part 1
Addiction Therapy: Disease Traits - Part 2
Disease of Addiction: Initial Stages - Part 3

Substance Abuse: New Experiences and Behaviors
Frightening blackouts can occur in this phase. Blackouts are when drug induced memory loss occurs while an individual is awake and would otherwise be completely cognizant of their surroundings and behaviors.
At the same time as the onset of emotional pain is starting, an effort to hide these painful feelings may begin in partnership with the rationalization of behaviors. This rationalization allows any negative feelings directed inward and resulting from the substance abuse to remain unidentified.
Despite the wall of rationalization, however, these feelings of anxiety, guilt, shame and remorse are present. The preoccupation with substance use develops and creates subtle lifestyle changes.
Additionally, the tolerance for drug and alcohol use increases. This tolerance increase leads to the abuse of other substances in an effort to escape the emotional pain being suffered during substance abuse addiction.
Supportive, licensed professionals at The Right Step will guide you through these discussions, using visual aids, to deepen your understanding of the disease of addiction and what experiences follow the phases of increased emotional pain and losing control.
