Dopamine Levels: Alcohol and Addiction – Outpatient Program
During Session Three of your Outpatient Treatment at The Right Step, you will be provided with a great deal of information regarding the disease of addiction and the specific chemicals in the brain affected by substance abuse.
Dopamine levels in the brain are an important factor in your brain’s response to the addictive substances of drugs and alcohol. Nerve cells in the pleasure center of your brain are directly impacted by drug abuse and dopamine levels, sometimes creating a sense of well-being and normalcy that may have been lacking in the brain of the potential substance abuse addict.
As you progress in your treatment for addiction at The Right Step, you will also learn more about the reward producing brain neurotransmitters and the connection with Reward Deficiency Syndrome.

Substance Abuse Addiction: Learning Coping Skills
An individual prone to acquiring substance abuse addiction may have a lower level of dopamine related activity, thus causing the use of alcohol and drugs to create that initial sense of normalcy and thereby promoting increased usage.
During your treatment for addiction, you will view graphs demonstrating the effect of various drugs upon the domain level related activity in your brain, to help increase your depth of understanding of the effect of drug abuse on your brain.
When you attend the eight-week Outpatient Program at The Right Step, you will be taught ways to develop and practice coping skills you previously relied upon drugs and alcohol for in order to achieve a sense of well-being, such that many who have entered into recovery have discovered that their psychological and spiritual condition is improved even more so than when actively using in the initial stages of substance abuse addiction.
