Drug Abuse and Alcoholism: Feeling Despair – Outpatient Program

In the final portion of Session Four of your treatment for addiction in the Outpatient Program provided by The Right Step, supportive, licensed instructors will be working with you to better comprehend the final stage of the addiction cycle called despair.

Despair is defined as feelings of helplessness and is often suffered by individuals with the disease of addiction.

Alcohol and drug addicts seeking addiction treatment have usually experienced feelings of despair which were preceded by guilt and shame.  These feelings may have become evident after using drugs and alcohol, or they may stem from the negative consequences that happened to the individual with substance abuse addiction after such drug abuse.

Shame and Guilt Involved in Substance Abuse Addiction

As you attend your Outpatient Treatment a minimum of three days per week, you will be provided with an opportunity to discuss the impact that the cycle of addiction has had on your life, including the times you may have felt guilt, shame or despair as a result of your addiction disease.

This important part of your treatment for addiction ties in to the fact that many alcoholics and drug addicts formerly discovered that the easiest way to alleviate their negative feelings connected to substance abuse was to simply avoid these feelings and continue using drugs and alcohol.

Following these group addiction treatment discussions regarding the addiction cycle, will be the lessons provided in Session Five, where the topic of triggers and cravings will be much more deeply addressed, as well as the influence these have upon the brain of the addict and their connection to addictive behaviors.
