Drug Abuse and Alcoholism: Overcoming the Use of Excuses
During your Outpatient addiction treatment program at The Right Step, you will already have discussed some of the information provided regarding addictive thinking and its role in your substance abuse addiction.
At this point, you will be learning more about the types of excuses that are commonly used by those in recovery from their addiction that can lead to a relapse back into active drug abuse or alcoholism.
Sometimes, individuals may use justifications that suggest they have no choice in their use of drugs and/or alcohol if a situation seemingly arises without warning. You may find yourself considering thoughts that a situation wasn’t your fault; that you had an argument with your loved one and so you did the “normal” thing and used drugs or alcohol.
Addictive Thinking in the Disease of Addiction
People with the disease of addiction may also say things like, “It was right before my period and I was depressed.” Or, “My parents were bugging me.” You might experience a truly discouraging situation such as an unfaithful mate or the death of a loved one.
Excuses such as the weather being gloomy, the plan of only having one drink and no more, being offered drugs by strangers, friends or relatives, happening across some old drugs or alcohol left behind in your home, office or vehicle or simply watching a movie that triggered a craving for drugs or alcohol can all be used by someone with a substance abuse addiction.
However, during the eight-week Outpatient Addiction Treatment Program at The Right Step, you will be familiarized with all of these many common addictive thoughts that can be pitfalls to a drug addict or alcoholic if they are not prepared to understand how to deal with these situations and thoughts.
