Drug Addiction and Alcoholism: Secondary Drug Use
Individuals with a drug addiction or alcohol addiction may choose to attend the eight-week Outpatient Treatment Program at The Right Step. When participating in your recovery through this addiction treatment program, you will be guided through a series of educational sessions to help you to better understand the many details involved in the disease of addiction and to learn practical ways to combat the natural tendency of an addict or alcoholic toward addiction relapse.
At this point in your group treatment program, you will have been discussing the topic of secondary drug use as it pertains to addiction recovery. There are many reasons why people may consider using secondary drugs and many medical reasons why this can be a dangerous choice for the recovering addict or alcoholic.
Pharmacological Coping Method
You will learn that using secondary drugs or using alcohol to cope with problems or life stresses will interfere with learning new coping behaviors, which are necessary to ensure a long-term positive addiction recovery prognosis.
12-Step Philosophy Conflict
If a patient in recovery uses secondary drugs or alcohol, it is unlikely that they will attend, or continue to attend, 12-Step groups that are vital to the recovery process because 12-Step groups encourage abstinence from all substances of abuse, rather than just from one specific type of drug or drink.
Abstinence Violation Effect
You will also learn more about the abstinence violation effect, which works something like this, “I had a drink and I blew my recovery, so I smoked a joint and then I used some cocaine.”
These and other reasons presented to you during your addiction treatment will assist you in better understand the dangers involved in secondary drug use.
