Drug and Alcohol Addiction: Stages of Recovery

Learn in-depth information about the stages of addiction recovery by attending the Outpatient Program at The Right Step when you are suffering from an addiction to drugs or an addiction to alcohol.

During this addiction treatment program, you will learn that people suffering from severe withdrawal should be viewed as having an acute psychiatric condition. Their brains are not functioning properly due to neurochemical imbalances. The condition may have dangerous consequences, such as suicide.

You will discover that other problems resulting from withdrawal include medical problems such as seizure, infections, cardiovascular problems, weight loss, and vitamin deficiencies.

Withdrawal from Drugs and Alcohol Withdrawal

Supportive, licensed instructors will also explain more about alcohol withdrawal specifically.  Information they will provide includes the fact that alcohol is frequently used with other drugs of abuse. When the drug of choice is one other than alcohol and the individual attempts total abstinence, he/she may go into alcohol withdrawal if unknowingly having become physiologically dependent.

Depression is another symptom you will learn about. Occasionally, in cases of severe depression, an anti-depressant medication may be necessary.

Your group discussion regarding substance abuse withdrawal will also include the effects that include difficulty concentrating, excessive sleep, fatigue and severe cravings. Contact with drug and alcohol stimuli, meaning exposure to objects, people, places, or situations, which have been associated with drug and alcohol use, can trigger cravings.

Additional addiction withdrawal stage features discussed will include physical detoxification, Insomnia, irritability and memory problems.
