Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment: Handling Emotions – Outpatient Program
During Session Seven of the eight-week Intensive Outpatient addiction treatment program at The Right Step, you will have had the opportunity to learn a great deal more about the effects of emotions and beliefs on the recovery of the alcoholic or drug addict. You will have been provided with methods for combating unhealthy thoughts (addictive thinking) and behaviors.
Group discussions regarding the disease of addiction and the ways that beliefs directly influence emotions will have been based upon the writings of Albert Ellis, PH.D. who created the Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) program.
After learning about the ABC’s of emotion as a part of the methods for recovery from addiction that supportive licensed professionals will be helping you to more deeply comprehend, you will then also be provided with examples for increasing your understanding. These examples may aid you in making the connection between the effects of emotions and active substance abuse or addiction relapse.

His son may interrupt his attempt at completing this father’s professional workload and in doing so; create the “Activating Event” or the “A” of the ABC’s of emotion. The father will then experience a thought or belief that will have a consequence tied to it. This consequence (“C” in the ABC’s of emotion) may include dealing with anger, an eruption of this anger, drinking alcohol and not completing the work that he set out to accomplish.
By means of the demonstration of real life examples,
the presentation of information regarding substance abuse addiction and
understanding the role that emotions, beliefs and behaviors have in the disease
of addiction, as well as through providing opportunities for group discussions
