Outpatient Addiction Treatment: Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Syphilis Explained - Outpatient Program

Syphilis is another of the STIs you will learn about during Session Eleven of the Intensive Outpatient Addiction Treatment Program at The Right Step.  You will learn about the causes and effects of Syphilis on women and men of all backgrounds and economic levels.

Information in your drug and alcohol treatment program will include how Syphilis is caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum.  An interesting fact about Syphilis is that when it is present there is a three to five-fold additional risk of acquiring HIV.

Syphilis is passed via direct contact with a Syphilis sore and as the rates in women continue to decrease, the rates in men are three and a half times that of the rates of Syphilis in women.

Continuing with your addiction treatment program will include learning that Syphilis the incidence of Syphilis has increased and decreased dramatically in recent years and in the United States, health officials reported over 32,000 cases of Syphilis in 2002.

Statistics provided by the licensed instructors at The Right Step will teach you that between 2001 and 2002, the number of reported primary and secondary Syphilis cases increased 12.4 percent. Reports of Syphilis outbreaks in men who have sex with men (MSM) suggest that rates of Syphilis in MSM are increasing.

Addiction Treatment Program - Syphilis Symptoms:

During your program you will learn about the first symptoms of a Syphilis infection and that they may go undetected because they are very mild and disappear spontaneously.  You will learn that the initial sores caused by Syphilis are called Chancres and they make it easier to transmit and acquire HIV infection sexually

Without treatment, Syphilis may go on to more advanced stages and can cause a transient rash and may include the involvement of the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, blood vessels, liver, bones and joints.  The full course of the STI Syphilis can take years and Penicillin continues to be the most effective drug to treat people with Syphilis.
