Preventing Relapse into Drug and Alcohol Addiction

Participation in the Outpatient Addiction Recovery Program at The Right Step is encouraged via guidance by licensed professionals who will walk you through the series of educational sessions available, discuss with you and the group the many aspects of drug abuse and alcoholism, as well as ways to overcome the pitfalls of addiction relapse and grant you the opportunity to deeply consider the ways that these many aspects of addiction have affected your life.

You will learn more about the “Wall” phase as you progress through Session Nine and take in the information presented during this Roadmap for Recovery portion of your addiction treatment program.

Your treatment for addiction covers this information because it is critical that patients anticipate the Wall, accurately perceiving it as a temporary phase and dealing with it by continuing the recovery activities that were established during the initial weeks of treatment. Exercise and regular program contact, as well as support from self-help groups are particularly beneficial during this time.

Relapse Factors During The Wall Stage

Some of the relapse factors that may occur during the wall stage are increased emotions, the dissolution of structures established in early abstinence, rise in interpersonal conflicts, a drift in behaviors, justifying addiction relapse, secondary drug or alcohol use, anhedonia, a resistance to exercise, experiencing insomnia, low energy and fatigue, as well as paranoia.

You will be helped to prepare for these experiences as you learn practical ways to deal with situations and emotions in your life while attempting to build and maintain positive change in your life as a recovering addict or alcoholic.
