Relapse Addiction:
Recovery from Addiction – Outpatient Program
Treatment for recovery from addiction is provided through the Outpatient Program at The Right Step. As you progress in the eight-weeks of addiction recovery classes, you will participate in a series of educational Sessions involving group discussions and addiction information presented for you to reflect upon by supportive, licensed instructors.
Session Five discussed the effects of triggers and cravings on the alcoholic and drug addict and taught methods for managing the different experiences brought on by substance abuse addiction. You will learn about environmental stimuli (external triggers) or emotional conditions (internal triggers) that will often cause the recovering addict to think about using drugs or alcohol.
Examples will be provided to help you in your addiction recovery such as examples about an individual seeing an old source of drugs when simply out on a normal grocery store excursion, or, when getting into a fight a loved one and immediately thinking of drinking.
Biology of Addiction
Discussions of previous behaviors that were common during active substance abuse and how quickly the different thoughts of using will come into the mind of the addict will help you to better understand the relapse addiction process.
Also covered in this session:
Addiction Triggers for Drugs and Alcohol - Triggers and Cravings – Part 1

Learning more about the biology of addiction in your Outpatient Treatment will help you better understand the way these experiences in your life may inflame the neurochemistry of the addiction and move your brain into the craving stage.
At this craving stage, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to stop the slide into drug or alcohol use. To the actively using substance abuser in early recovery, the addiction process including trigger, thought, craving and proceeding to use, it feels as if this sequence is happening simultaneously.
Instructors at The Right Step will help you learn more about this trigger to use process in order to assist you in your recovery from substance abuse addiction. The successful key in avoiding relapse in addiction is to avoid allowing the addiction process to progress. Stopping the use thought when it first begins can prevent it from becoming an overpowering craving.
You will learn how important it is to recognize your thoughts immediately and begin the thought stopping techniques that you will learn as you proceed in your addiction treatment at The Right Step.
