Relapse Recovery: The Progressive Relapse Process – Outpatient Programs

As you progress in your Outpatient addiction recovery treatment program at The Right Step, you will continue to learn about addiction relapse and how it is more than just falling back into actual substance abuse.

Addiction relapse is the progressive process of becoming so dysfunctional in recovery that self-medication with alcohol or drugs seems like a reasonable choice.

Substance Relapse Process

You will discover that there are two differences. First, each problem that brings us closer to substance abuse or each domino in the line, gets a little bit bigger and heavier until the last domino in the sequence is ten feet tall, four feet wide, and a foot thick. As this 10,000 pound domino begins to fall on us, it is too heavy for us to handle alone.

The second difference is that the dominoes circle around behind us. When the last domino falls, it hits us from behind when we're not looking. This is one of the examples that will be described in your addiction treatment during Outpatient Treatment because the relapse process is a lot like knocking over a line of dominoes.

It is easy to visualize that when the first domino hits the second, which hits the third, and so on, a progressive chain reaction has started.

When discussing the sequences of problems that lead from stable sobriety to relapse during your addiction treatment, you will find that these problems resemble the process of the falling dominoes.

Relapse Recovery at The Right Step

Supportive, licensed professionals will help guide you through the process of understanding how important it is to remember that drinking alcohol and abusing drugs doesn’t begin because of the last problem in the sequence.

Alcoholics and drug addicts relapse into substance abuse because the entire sequence of problems got out of control. Your opportunity for increasing your understanding on the path to positive change will include a more in-depth analysis of the progression of problems that are called the relapse process.

This will include more information on the relapse warning signs, the addiction relapse warning sign list and the high risk situations involved in these.
