Roadmap to Recovery: Sobriety and Monogamy
The Roadmap for Recovery is the focus of Session Nine of the Outpatient Addiction Treatment Program at The Right Step. At this point in your recovery sessions, experienced, licensed instructors will be discussion sexual behaviors as they relate to factors that can influence drug or alcohol addiction relapse.
Many people will have concerns about sexual issues during addiction recovery. It is important to stress that in virtually every case, sexual behavior will, over time, return to normal once the body and the mind have adjusted to a drug and alcohol free state of living.
Concerns that a recovering addiction and alcoholic may commonly have can include concern about sexual dysfunction, sexual abstinence, a lack of interest in sexual activities, losing some of the intensity previously known in sexual enjoyment, as well as feelings of shame and guilt about one’s own sexual behaviors.
Sexual concerns that arise during addiction recovery may also include experiencing cravings for drugs or alcohol in connection with sexual arousal. An individual attempting to work toward positive change in their life by entering into sobriety and remaining abstinent from drugs and alcohol may also be concerned about their behaviors as they relate to their sexual activities, their sexual intimacy and their participation in monogamous sexual relationships.
