Substance Abuse and Addiction: Impaired Thinking
During Session One of the eight-week Outpatient Program at The Right Step, the subject of impaired thinking will be thoroughly explained to you. Through an interactive group environment, the ways in which the thinking of an addict or alcoholic may be impaired will be analyzed.
Supportive, licensed professionals will help you to understand the impaired thinking, also called “Denial,” which perpetuates the cycle of addiction by affecting your behaviors and decisions.
You will learn how denial experienced by the addict or alcoholic is often very sincere and includes a range of emotions surrounding this impaired thinking process. In fact, most people do not even realize they are in denial.
While participating in this initial Session of the IOP substance abuse treatment, you will be helped to determine whether or not you are experiencing denial unknowingly.
Addiction and Denial
As you learn more about what impaired thinking is, you will begin to comprehend the ways that denial affects your substance abuse behaviors, as well as your ability to end the cycle of addiction.
Through a classroom discussion that includes a group question and answer exercise, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the internal dialogue included in denial and the ways that it may reassure continued substance abuse.
Recovery professionals at The Right Step will guide you through the process of identifying denial and the internal dialogue you may frequently use in justifying your active substance abuse.
Internal Dialogue and Impaired Thinking
Examples of the types of denial, as well as examples of commonly used internal dialogues will be provided, discussed and reflected upon to help you conscientiously digest this aspect of the cycle of addiction.
This important stage of the Outpatient Program can help you break down the doors blocking your ability to absorb new information essential to recovering from your drug or alcohol addiction.
The addiction cycle you will be learning about in Session One involves more than just your belief system, perception and impaired thinking. As you progress through this Session, you will soon be focusing on unmanageability occurring with substance abuse and addiction.
