Substance Abuse Associations: Addiction Triggers

While attending Outpatient Addiction Treatment at The Right Step, you will learn a great deal about addiction triggers and the ways that the mind of the addict activates when exposed to various substance abuse associations.

Supportive, licensed instructors will guide you through the recovery process as you increase your knowledge and understanding of substance abuse addiction.  Included in this process will be learning the actual definition of a trigger which is that a trigger is a stimulus which has been repeatedly associated with the preparation for, anticipation of, or the use of alcohol or other drugs. These stimuli include people, places, things, times of day, emotional states and secondary drug use.

Addiction Triggers and People

You will also learn that at times people can be addiction triggers.  People that may be included in this category of addiction triggers could be drug-using friends and drug dealers.  Simply hearing the voices of these people can at time serve as a trigger for substance abuse relapse.

The absence of your significant other could also be an addiction trigger.  Sometimes sexual partners in illicit sex and groups discussing drug use may also be considered as triggers for a drug or alcohol addiction.

As you progress in your recovery treatment at The Right Step, you will also learn about other types of addiction triggers as you attempt to overcome your addictions and move along the path toward achieving positive change in your life.
