Treatment for Addiction: The Perception of the Addict
Treatment for addiction at The Right Step includes our Outpatient Program, an eight-week recovery class to assist you with your disease of addiction.
Session One will begin with a description of what belief systems are, how they affect your drug and alcohol addiction and will continue with a reflective discussion of your perceptions resulting from these deeply ingrained beliefs developed during childhood.
At this stage in your recovery program you will particularly be learning about your perceptions of the drug addict and the alcoholic.
Alcoholism and Drug Addiction
Understanding the role that your perception of the drug addict or the alcoholic has played in your disease is an important aspect of the recovery process as you learn more about the cycle of addiction in Session One.
You will be encouraged to participate in a discussion regarding your perception of the addict, where you will write down what you see in your mind’s eye when you think of an addict and separately when you think of an alcoholic.
As you reflect upon your personal perception of a substance abuser, you will also have an opportunity to see what other participants in your Outpatient Program group see when they think of those with a substance abuse addiction.
Addiction Rehab Exercises
Before and after images of a drug user and alcoholic will be displayed that show the differences between the earlier stages of addiction, verses the more progressive periods of substance abuse, demonstrating the visual effects upon the substance abuser.
Many people have similar pictures in mind when they think of drug addicts or alcoholics. The result of your classroom exercises will provide informative examples of these conceptions, as well as help you to better realize the difference between the perceptions and the realities of the disease of addiction.
During Session One of your treatment for addiction, supportive, licensed professionals will guide you through these perception exercises and then assist you in progressing to increase the depth of your understanding regarding the aspects of impaired thinking that are embodied in the cycle of addiction.
