Treatment for Addictive Behaviors – Outpatient Program
While attending the eight-week Outpatient Program at The Right Step, you will learn about the different stages of the addiction cycle, including preoccupation, ritual, compulsivity and feeling despair.
You will discover that the actual addiction ritual comes after preoccupation and is a set of learned, automatic behaviors. Ritualistic behaviors do not require a thought process because they have become natural, as if on auto-pilot.
Examples of ritualistic behaviors, such as getting dressed in the morning, will be discussed to help you better understand the ways that the ritual stage of the disease of addiction is behavior without thought.
Substance Abuse Ritual Behaviors
Supportive, licensed addiction treatment professionals will encourage you to participate in an educational session discussing the habits you have formed that commonly lead to substance abuse. When you are accustomed to certain rituals that end in drug abuse or drinking alcohol, those common behaviors will create a very strong craving for your chosen substance.
As you learn more about the biology of addiction in the series of Sessions provided by The Right Step, you will learn about the effect upon the nervous system in connection with ritual behaviors.
Examples of ritual behaviors that you may have developed could be checking your stash upon waking each morning, verifying you have money to buy more drugs or alcohol while you are preparing for your day, habitually heading to the liquor store or bar after work, checking the clock more and more frequently as the work day nears its end, and then of course, the routines of traveling to your normal location for abusing drugs or alcohol.
Every single thing that you do as preparation to your using habits is a part of your ritual. Whenever you began the process of preparing for your ritual, which may even have been the day before you are actually using drugs and alcohol, is the point at which your ritual use begins.
Through group discussions and writing exercises, you will have the opportunity to analyze your ritual use behaviors and their integral part in your continued substance abuse.
