Treatment for Drug Abuse and Alcoholism-Introductory Phase of Addiction
Session Five of your Intensive Outpatient Program at The Right Step will include an educational curriculum, which will delve deeper into the different phases of addiction. At first, you and the group will be discussing the introductory phase of addiction, also called the “Social Phase.”
During this initial stage of the addiction disease, you may not have abused any substances as frequently as you later did. Drug and alcohol use may have been confined to special occasions and social events. During this time, you probably found that the positive aspects of drug or alcohol use outweighed the negative consequences or risks involved.
Your initial substance abuse may have been to relieve anxiety, to increase social standing or for various other benefits in your life.
Drug and Alcohol Abuse Conditioning
The experienced and licensed
instructors at The Right Step will help you to understand the process of
conditioning that was occurring with your brain during the beginning of your addiction disease.
Also covered in this session:
Addiction Triggers for Drugs and Alcohol - Triggers and Cravings – Part 1
Addiction Triggers for Drugs and Alcohol – Part 2

This initial substance abuse will have begun a brain conditioning process
leading to future triggers and cravings in association with your body and brain
responses to alcohol and drugs.
While the drug and alcohol use will have entered into your thought processes, it will still have been only a small part of your cognitive thinking patterns.
Furthering your education for substance abuse addiction recovery, you will move forward in your treatment to learn about the phase that follows the social phase of drug addiction and alcoholism.
