While some individuals who use various substances cease using after experiencing minor consequences, others continue to use despite negative consequences and even increase both the quantity and frequency of their substance abuse.
The Substance Abuse Addiction Process
Progressing in Session Three will help you to better comprehend the difference between someone who uses substances with control and quits, verses the individual who loses control of substance abuse and continues, as well as increases their alcohol or drug abuse.
When this continuation occurs, the substance being used becomes the focal point in the life of the addict. All other aspects of the life of an individual suffering from substance abuse addiction become affected as relationships, employment and all other responsibilities take a back seat to the substance abuse.
Part of your addiction treatment will include learning that one with a substance abuse addiction often has to suffer dire consequences, perhaps even losing everything that was formerly important in their lives, prior to seeking help for addiction to drugs and alcohol.
Moving forward in your treatment for addiction, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the factors involved in creating the increased possibility of acquiring a substance abuse addiction.
