Understanding Addiction – Outpatient Program

In Session Three of the Outpatient Program at The Right Step, you will be encouraged and guided by licensed professionals who will help you in the process of understanding addiction through a series of informative, interactive group discussions aided by visual, verbal and written exercises.

As you learn more about the aspects of addiction that verify it is a brain disease, you will also come to comprehend the consequences on the brain, the way that the brain is both involved and affected during the course of substance abuse addiction and more about recovery from alcoholism and addiction.

Questions will be raised and discussed regarding whether or not addiction disorders are affected by the level of intelligence an individual has, their religious background or the psychological effects of experiencing trauma during childhood.

Is Addiction Caused by a Lack of Intelligence?

In your addiction treatment course, you will be provided with examples to describe the misconceptions related to addiction disorder that include the question of whether or not a lack of intelligence may cause substance abuse addiction.

Statistics will be provided to help you in learning more about the large percentage of proven intellectuals who have suffered from addiction disorders, including actual medical professionals who graduated at the tops of their classes.

The Role of Religious Beliefs in Addiction

Through your treatment for addiction in the series of educational Sessions provided at The Right Step, you will learn about the many effects of addiction, including the spiritual affects involved.

These discussions will also include the misconceptions regarding addiction and religion, as well as the “higher power” discussions included in 12-step programs for alcoholics and addicts.

Psychology in Addiction: Trauma in Childhood

Moving forward in the Intensive Outpatient program, you will be presented with the opportunity to learn additional details regarding the psychology of addiction and how often the factor of childhood trauma is involved.

You will have the opportunity to increase your understanding of the healing process involved and the challenges often faced by those in early sobriety as they deal with feelings of guilt and remorse, which may cause pain to those attempting to achieve recovery from addiction.
