Addiction Recovery Information: Hepatitis and the Liver

One of the topics that will be covered in the outpatient addiction treatment sessions at The Right Step is Hepatitis. At this point, we will be discussing the liver specifically as a part of deepening your thorough understanding of substance abuse addiction and the many effects on the body.

Supportive addiction recovery professionals who have all been involved in dealing with the addiction recovery process firsthand and who know just what it takes to successfully achieve long-term sobriety will aid you in your understanding of the information presented during this addiction treatment session and how you can best apply what you learn to your personal efforts toward positive change.

Outpatient Addiction Treatment: Learning about the Liver

While participating in the outpatient addiction treatment program at The Right Step, you will learn that the liver is our largest internal organ. In a healthy individual it weighs about three pounds and is six inches thick.

The liver is located at the top of the abdomen and is protected by the rib cage. About three pints of blood flow through the liver every minute.

Learning more about the liver in your treatment for addiction to drugs or addiction to alcohol will also include learning more about the functions of the liver. The liver stores energy, produces bile, stores vitamins, makes proteins, behaves as a filter for the body, handles cholesterol and is a regulator for your body.

Functions of the Liver

As mentioned above, while in outpatient addiction treatment, you will receive information about how one of the main functions of the liver is to store energy. It does this by removing glucose from the blood and converting it. Then, when the body needs energy, the liver returns the glucose into the blood stream.

Bile is a yellowish brown liquid which contains salt to aid in digestion of lipids and fats. The liver collects and stores vitamins A, B12, D, E and K. It also produces several vital proteins for calcium and the clotting of blood.

Additionally, the liver acts as a filter for toxins, such as over-the-counter and illicit drugs and alcohol. The liver produces and eliminates cholesterol. Cholesterol is involved with processing vitamins and hormones and the liver also regulates male and female hormones, thyroid and steroids in the body.
