Outpatient Addiction Treatment Program: Hepatitis A

As you continue to take in the information presented to you in this outpatient addiction treatment session, you will learn that Hepatitis A is found in feces of person with hepatitis A virus and that it is transmitted typically by putting items in the mouth that have had contact with the Hepatitis A virus.

Symptoms of Hepatitis A include jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea and fever. Epidemics of Hepatitis A occur both in communities and nationwide. Before Hepatitis A vaccine became available, the number of reported cases reached 35,000 per year. 

In the late 1990s, the Hepatitis A vaccine was more widely used and the number of cases reached historic lows. You will also find in going through this portion of the treatment for an addiction to drugs or alcohol that one-third of Americans have evidence of past infection and immunity.
