PAW Symptoms: Emotional Overreaction
Information regarding the symptoms of PAW, or post-acute withdrawal, will be discussed in depth with participants of the outpatient addiction treatment program at The Right Step. By this point in your treatment program, you will have learned about a number of these symptoms and the reasons why it is important to become aware of what these symptoms are in order to live in a more positive manner in addiction recovery.
Another symptom that supportive, experienced addiction recovery professionals at The Right Step will be discussing with you in your treatment for a substance abuse addiction will be the experience of emotional overreaction or numbness as a symptom of PAW.
You will have the opportunity to participate in group addiction treatment discussions, as well as verbal and visual exercises where you will learn more about the fact that persons with emotional problems in recovery tend to overreact.
Drug Addiction & Alcohol Addiction Treatment: Symptoms of PAW
When things happen that require two units of emotional reaction, they react with ten. It is like holding the “times” key down on a calculator. You may find yourself becoming angry over what may later seem to have been a trivial matter.
You will also learn in this portion of your drug addiction or alcohol addiction treatment session that you may feel more anxious or excited than you have reason to be when you suffer from the symptoms of PAW in addiction recovery.
When this overreaction puts more stress on the nervous systems than it can handle, there is an emotional shutdown. If this happens to you, you become emotionally numb, unable to feel anything. And even when you know you should feel something, you do not. You may swing from one mood to another without knowing why.
