Sleeping Disorders in Addiction Recovery

Addiction treatment provided at The Right Step includes the opportunity to participate in the eight week outpatient addiction recovery program where supportive, experienced addiction treatment professionals will guide you through a variety of sessions to increase your understanding of the many topics that relate to issues faced by individuals who are attempting to overcome a dependence on drugs or a dependence on alcohol.

During this particular addiction recovery session, you will be learning more about the effect and symptoms of PAW, or post-acute withdrawal that many people experience as they attempt to achieve long-term sobriety and healthy recovery in their lives.

Learning about the details of PAW, can assist you in knowing how to cope when or if you experience these.

Experiencing Disturbing Dreams

One of these symptoms that we will be discussing involves sleep problems. You will learn that most recovering people experience sleep problems. Some of them are temporary, while some are life-long. The most common sleep problem in early recovery is unusual or disturbing dreams.

We will be discussing the ways that these dreams may interfere with your ability to get the sleep you need. However, you will find encouragement as you learn that they become less frequent and less severe as the length of abstinence increases.

Examples of the challenges faced by recovering alcoholics and recovering drug addicts will be provided in the outpatient addiction treatment program at The Right Step to assist in your personal addiction recovery process.

One of these examples includes a man named Mike who was a periodic drinker. Periods of sobriety for him usually lasted for several months. During the time he was not drinking, he had dreams that severely disrupted his sleep.

His wife said, “I never realized the nightmares Mike was having had anything to do with drinking or not drinking. He would frequently jump out of bed, screaming in terror. When I was able to awaken him and calm him, he couldn’t remember what he dreamed, but he remembered being afraid. After a year of sobriety, he seldom had the dreams. Only then did I realize that they were related to his drinking.”

In your addiction treatment program, you will also learn that even if you do not experience unusual dreams, you may have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. You may experience changes in your sleep patterns; sleeping for long periods at a time or sleeping at different times of the day. Some of these patterns may never return to “normal,” but most people are able to adjust to them without severe difficulty.
