Addiction Recovery Programs: Mechanisms of Defense
During this session of the outpatient addiction treatment program at The Right Step you will have been learning about the many defense mechanisms that individuals may take on or experience and particularly as they relate to the disease of addiction.
Drug addicts and alcoholics who are interested in ending their dependence on drugs and their dependence on alcohol will continue to learn the details of defense mechanisms and how they can affect your life in this substance abuse addiction treatment program.
At this point, you will now be learning what introjection is and how adopting someone else’s values and standards without exploring whether or not they actually fit oneself, “shoulds” or “ought to’s” is one of the many defensive mechanisms that might be developed and potentially cause harm to the individual with this defense.
Fantasy is also a means of internal defense against dealing with the pains of life as one may try to handle their problems or frustrations through daydreaming or imaginary solutions.
Addiction Treatment Information: Methods of Self Protection or Defense Mechanisms
Repression is another defense mechanism that you will learn about and includes unconsciously blocking out painful thoughts.
Qualified addiction recovery professionals will also explain what identification is to you as you learn that this means trying to feel more important by associating oneself with someone or something that is highly valued.
Acting out is another defense mechanism, which means to repeatedly take actions to keep from being uptight without weighing the possible results of those actions.
You will also learn about compensation, which is hiding a weakness by stressing too strongly the opposing desirable strength, such as over-indulging in one area to make up for frustration in another.
Regression is another method you will learn about where an individual may re-adopt actions done at a less mature level of development when they experience stressful situations.
Drug Addiction and Alcohol Addiction Treatment: Personal Reflection
You may be encouraged to courageously reflect on the details of your life in order to help you move forward into positive addiction recovery and long-term sobriety by asking yourself how your defenses may have kept you from looking at your alcohol or other drug use realistically.
Learning about the cost and benefit analysis is another item that will be included in this portion of the outpatient addiction treatment program at The Right Step. You will discuss how you may be able to become aware as quickly as possible that you are using a defense mechanisms and will be asked to consider for any defense mechanisms you have decided you want to give up, what you will replace them with to deal with the situations that prompted you to use those defense mechanisms to begin with.
