Substance Abuse Addiction Treatment: Brain Neurotransmitters

Learning more about the biology of addiction is included in this portion of the outpatient addiction treatment program available at The Right Step, where drug rehabilitation and alcohol rehabilitation is provided for individuals with the disease of addiction.

At this point in your addiction recovery session, you will have the opportunity to absorb and reflect on information presented to you regarding the neurotransmitters in your brain.

Experienced addiction treatment instructors will guide you through this process of learning that we have a handful of major “natural” chemicals, or neurotransmitters that make us feel good. You will find that all of the plant derived and synthetically compounded chemicals that fit on the same receptor as “natural” chemicals form a class of addicting drugs as you continue to progress in your outpatient addiction treatment program at The Right Step.

Classes of Addictive Drugs

In this addiction treatment program, you will learn that there are only three major classes of addictive drugs. These classes are sedative hypnotics, stimulants and opiates. In addition to these three classes there is also what is called a “wastebasket” class, which includes hallucinogens.

You will learn that all drugs in a class are cross addicting, cross tolerant, and cross relapsing and will be helped to understand what this means.

Within each class of drugs there are similar results. These results include intoxication, detoxification and overdose.
