Substance Abuse Addiction Treatment: Drug Classes
As you continue to progress in this specific session of the outpatient addiction treatment program provided at The Right Step, you will learn that there are four major classes of drugs. These drugs are GABA, or sedative hypnotics, endorphins, catecholamines and hallucinogenics.
Within each of these drug classes there are many addictive drugs that are often abused.
The first of these drug classes, GABA, or sedative hypnotics includes drugs such as alcohol, N20, barbiturates, miltown, soma pills, BZDs, Valium, Xanax, Ativan, Klonipin, Rohybnol, Temazepam, sleeping pills, inhalants and GHB.
Within the drug class of endorphins you will find that opiates, narcotics, morphine, codeine, heroin, Demerol, Stadol, Fentanyl, Methadone, Suboxone, Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, and Ultram are all included as addictive drugs within this particular drug class of endorphins.
The next drug class that we will be discussing during your outpatient addiction treatment course will be catecholamines. These include drugs of abuse such as stimulants, diet pills, methamphetamines, Adderal, Ritalin, cylert and others.
The hallucinogenic drug class includes marijuana, LSD, PCP, Ketamine, Psilocybin, Peyote, Mescaline and Rain Forest Toads.
Drug Abuse Treatment
Other drugs that are commonly abused include medications such as Benadryl, Phenergan, Elavil and Prednisone. Also included in regular drug abuse issues are inhalants such as glue, paint, whiteout, toluene, gasoline, N2O, as well as caffeine and tobacco.
Qualified, experienced drug abuse and alcohol abuse treatment professionals at The Right Step will be discussing with you the occurrence of cross addiction between classes, which always occurs based on exposure, availability, or change in preference.
Most often use of other drugs results in addiction relapse back to the original drug of choice. This is because the drug use experience connects through the Locus Ceruleus, which is a small area in the brain that produces all of the brain adrenalin or Norepinephrine.
You will learn in your substance abuse addiction treatment program that the nervous system is not able to make the subtle distinction between the classes of drugs.
