Nutrition: Role in Alcohol and Drug Treatment
Recovery from
alcoholism or drug addiction is enhanced by improved nutrition. This statement is increasingly accepted in
the healthcare and treatment communities.
At the Right Step it is a foundational element in our recovery approach.
We understand that addiction, dependency and even substance abuse are harmful on multiple levels. Specifically with regards to the body there is the damage caused by taking or using often toxic substances. However beyond that level of harm, practicing alcoholics, drug addicts and dependant people often lead unhealthy lifestyles characterized by things such as a poor diet, infrequent eating, excessive eating and/or a lack of exercise. Prolonged use of drugs or alcohol can have serious consequences on the physical health of the user, often made worse by the fact the addict or alcoholic has failed to maintain proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. Serious illnesses and maladies often result when addicts or alcoholics have neglected their nutrition and their bodies are weakened to the point they cannot maintain health and defend against infections.
These often overlooked factors in addiction treatment not only directly affect the detoxification and treatment process, they can impact the quality of life and long term prognosis for maintaining sobriety after the initial treatment phase of recovery. We understand that people who physically feel better are less likely to relapse and proper nutrition coupled with a healthier lifestyle are proven methods to help ensure a lifetime of sobriety.
