Rapper Lil Wayne was recently hospitalized in the intensive care unit after suffering from seizures apparently related to his abuse of “sizzurp,” otherwise referred to as “purple drank.” The events of the weekend have put the spotlight on the drink, which is particularly popular in hip-hop communities in the South, and has been implicated in the deaths of Pimp C, Dr. Screw and Big Moe, three prominent artists. This has sparked interest in the drug, and has left numerous readers wondering what “sizzurp” actually is and why people would use it.
Sizzurp – AKA Promethazine/Codeine
Sizzurp is a drink made from a cough syrup containing promethazine (a commonly used antihistamine) and codeine (a narcotic painkiller and cough suppressant), which is consumed in up to 16 times the recommended quantities to achieve a high. The prescription medication is mixed with fruit-flavored soda and dissolved Jolly Ranchers to form a cocktail. Codeine is chemically related to heroin, binding to the same receptors in the brain to produce euphoria. Promethazine is also used as a sedative, creating heightened euphoria when prescribed quantities are exceeded.

It was not long ago that Heath Ledger died from an overdose of prescription medication. Shortly after there was some speculation as to how much money the late actor was leaving behind, and if his daughter would be taken care of by his estate. News out September 29th shows that his daughter Matilda Rose will indeed be taken care of. As stands the actors daughter stands to inherit the entire estate of her father which is valued at 16.6 million dollars.
Ledger’s will was composed before the birth of his daughter and all of his assets were willed to his parents and sisters, however both parties decided it was best to “gift” the millions to Matilda Rose. According to Yahoo the actor’s father Kim stated in March that:
Girls Aloud singer Nadine Coyle has come out to report her actions as being selfish in her recent split with Jesse Metcalfe. You might remember Metcalfe from such shows as Desperate Housewives-and well, that’s about all he is known for. Apparently the actor has been suffering with alcohol addiction and it was too much for Coyle to bear after a year of dating.
This is only the latest in a string of embarrassments for Metcalfe. After Housewives he struggled to find good work, and his only recent notable appearance in the tabloids came after he was beaten up outside of a nightclub. After this debacle he was seen riding around town on a motorcycle, a move that was viewed as an attempt to toughen up his fading image.
