Outpatient Detox: What is it?
Outpatient Detox, or Ambulatory Detoxification as it is clinically known, is an option for clients who are dependent on alcohol and other drugs, have moderate signs/symptoms of withdrawal, and for clients who need less structure. Clients who undergo Outpatient Detoxification receive medical supervision on a daily basis; however, they are able to remain at home and continue with school, work, and other activities.
Is Outpatient Detox the Right Choice for You?
Outpatient Detox, five to ten days in length, meets for a minimum of three hours and a maximum of five hours daily with the longest days being the days you are admitted and discharged. You will be assessed by the nurse and the licensed chemical dependency counselor to determine eligibility. Following this, the medical director will meet with you and complete a medical history and physical exam, determine medication and protocols needed, and authorize admission to Outpatient Detoxification treatment. Each day you will be seen by the nurse and the counselor in order to determine your progress in the program and to determine if you have further needs.
If it is determined that Outpatient Detox is appropriate, you will be prescribed the appropriate medications to reduce the symptoms of withdrawal. You will then return to the facility daily where your progress will be evaluated, medications administered, vital signs taken, and detox monitoring is completed. You will also attend individual counseling and group counseling sessions to begin addressing the underlying issues surrounding your alcohol or drug abuse. There are no group sessions held on Sundays; only vital signs, medication and detox monitoring will be performed.
It is important to note that Outpatient Detox, is NOT a stand-alone program or service and must be combined with outpatient treatment. While in Outpatient Detox the treatment team, consisting of the licensed counselor, nurse, and physician, will assist you in determining the next step in the process of recovery. Outpatient Detox is an important first step in the process of recovery from the disease of addiction, whether it is alcoholism, drug addiction or a combination of chemical addictions.
