For nearly three decades, Grant Perry has served individuals struggling with addiction and mental health issues as well as their families. From San Diego to St. Louis, Chicago to Houston, he has directed hospital programs, inpatient and outpatient treatment centers for both adults and adolescents, and an outreach program. In 1999, Grant joined The Right Step as a lead counselor for the adult residential program. One year later he was promoted to program director, a role he dedicated himself to for 10 years. From there, he stepped into the role of executive director. Part of what has kept Grant at The Right Step for over 14 years is the program’s personalized approach. Fair and direct, he knows that every person has a unique story. No client is pigeon-holed or given a one-size-fits-all treatment plan. Every individual is approached with the necessary blend of compassion and accountability. “We treat people from all walks of life, economic strata and philosophical beliefs,” Grant says. “What we’ve created here is a life raft big enough for everyone to get in.”
An Introduction to the Recovery Community
The Right Step is a 12-Step based program. For more than 75 years, the 12 Steps have played a central role in helping people into recovery from a wide range of addictions. “I believe the 12-Step program is the best way to offer recovery to the broadest spectrum of people,” Grant says. “In a safe, structured environment, clients have the opportunity to address the issues underlying their drug or alcohol problems and integrate into the recovery community.” Clients participate in daily 12-Step meetings during treatment and have a strong foundation in place for long-term recovery after they leave. Houston has a thriving recovery community and is a great place to start on the path toward healing. Set in a historic neighborhood, close to museums, universities and other cultural attractions, The Right Step’s residential treatment center in Houston introduces clients to sober recreational activities and a real-world recovery environment. Treatment is based on the 12 Steps but, owing to the diverse skills and backgrounds of The Right Step Houston’s team of professionals, it is also multi-dimensional. In addition to being licensed by the state of Texas, the treatment professionals have the type of longevity that reflects the program’s commitment to its clients and staff. In aggregate, the team has 45 years of residential counseling experience. Between two counselors in its Houston outpatient program, there’s 25 years of experience that clients can draw from to support their recovery.
Life After Addiction
In the years to come, Grant and The Right Step Houston team will be focused on expanding its reach to help more people. A Texas native, Grant is passionate about recovery and carries a strong message of hope to anyone suffering from addiction. “There is life after chemical dependency,” he says, “and it’s one that is better than anything you can imagine now.”
