Commonly Abused Drugs and Medications Used to Treat Addiction

  1. Adderall® (amphetamine/dextroamphetamine): a central nervous system stimulant used for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in adults and children.
  2. Ambien® (zolpidem): a sedative used to treat insomnia.
  3. Antabuse® (disulfiram): a medication used to treat chronic alcoholism by causing unpleasant effects when any amount of alcohol is consumed.
  4. Ativan® (lorazepam): a benzodiazepine with sedating effects used for the treatment of insomnia and seizures, but most commonly prescribed for severe anxiety.
  5. Buprenorphine: an opioid medication used to treat opiate dependence.
  6. Campral® (acamprosate calcium): a medication used in the treatment of alcoholism that is thought to work by restoring the balance of chemicals disrupted by alcohol dependence and  usually prescribed while patients are attending support groups.
  7. Codeine: an opiate used in the treatment of cough and mild to moderate pain.
  8. Darvocet® (acetaminophen/propoxyphene): a narcotic pain reliever used to treat mild-to-moderate pain.
  9. Dilaudid® (hydromorphone): an opiate used to treat moderate-to-severe pain and suppress coughing.
  10. Fentanyl: a narcotic pain reliever used in the treatment of chronic breakthrough pain, commonly administered in the form of a transdermal patch.
  11. Hydrocodone: an opioid used to treat moderate-to-severe pain and suppress coughing.
  12. Ketamine: a drug used in human and veterinary medicine that induces a state known as “dissociative anesthesia”.
  13. Klonopin® (clonazepam): a benzodiazepine used to control seizures and relieve panic attacks.
  14. Librium® (chlordiazepoxide): a benzodiazepine used for anxiety relief and muscle relaxation, and may also be used in the treatment of alcohol withdrawal.
  15. Lorcet® (hydrocodone/acetaminophen): see hydrocodone.

  17. Lunesta® (eszopiclone): a hypnotic medication used to treat insomnia.
  18. Methadone: an opioid used to treat moderate-to-severe pain that may also be prescribed to opiate-dependent patients to prevent the occurrence of withdrawal symptoms.
  19. Morphine: an opiate used to treat severe pain including cancer pain.
  20. Naltrexone: an opiate antagonist used to treat alcoholism by reducing cravings and blocking the effects of opiate drugs.

  22. OxyContin® (oxycodone): an opioid used in the treatment of moderate-to-severe pain.
  23. Percocet® (oxycodone/paracetamol): a narcotic pain reliever used to treat severe acute pain.

  25. Ritalin® (methylphenidate): a central nervous system stimulant used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in adults and children.
  26. Rohypnol® (flunitrazepam): a benzodiazepine, also known as “roofies” and the “date rape drug”, commonly prescribed for severe insomnia; it’s most notorious side effect is amnesia for the period the drug is affecting the body.
  27. Soma® (carisoprodol): a muscle relaxant used muscular and pain conditions.
  28. Sonata® (zaleplon): a sedative/hypnotic used primarily in the treatment of insomnia.
  29. Suboxone® (buprenorphine/naloxone): see buprenorphine.
  30. Subutex® (buprenorphine/naloxone): see buprenorphine.
  31. Valium® (diazepam): a benzodiazepine used to treat anxiety, muscle spasms, seizures and some of the effects of alcohol withdrawal.

  34. Xanax® (alprazolam): a benzodiazepine used in the treatment of panic attacks and anxiety disorders.
