While the world is at war against the current opiate epidemic, drugs like heroin and fentanyl are taking a tremendous toll on communities. The number of people who are falling victim to the disease of drug addiction is both sad and alarming. Deaths from overdose of heroin and fentanyl are at all-time highs. Therefore, this is an excellent time to remember what International Overdose Awareness Day is all about.
About International Overdose Awareness Day
It was initiated in 2001 in Australia by a gentleman who goes by the name SJ Finn. At the time he introduced the concept, he was managing a needle and syringe program at The Salvation Army in a small community in Victoria, Australia. Over the years, his noble vision caught on to the point that at least 40 different countries now celebrate the event. Like every year, Overdose Awareness Day 2019 is on the calendar for August 31.
The purpose of International Overdose Awareness Day is to pay tribute to the people who have fallen victim to an overdose death. Likewise, the day also belongs to the family and friends who have lost someone close to them.
By awakening people to the seriousness of the current overdose death problem in America, the hope is that change will be forthcoming. Until then, the nation’s alcohol and drug rehabs like the Right Step will serve as the last line of defense against national tragedy.
The Right Step Honors Overdose Awareness Day 2019
On August 31 of this year, our thoughts will be on the clients who have passed through our doors into recovery. We will also be mindful of the people who never made it to rehab before the disease of addiction claimed their lives. Serving to make sure people have a place to go for help is why we do what we do. We hope that our substance abuse treatment programs in Texas will make some kind of difference.
While we will honor International Overdose Awareness Day, we are very much aware of people are dying every day. As you read this information, it’s incumbent on you to make sure you and the people around know help is available.
